Sharing a devotional with you from Mark 5:1-20 – Encountering Jesus
Power encounters can have 2 effects. 1) You can embrace it or 2) you can reject it out of fear. In our passage today, the demonized man was living in the tombs. He has been suffering under the hands of many demons for many years. He is like a living corpse being toyed around by demons. No one was able to subdue the man due to his immense strength. However, when Jesus came, He was able to set the man free and subdue the evil spirits that were in him. The man encountered the mercy and the power of God. When others in town heard of this news, they feared Jesus and told Him to leave the town. They wanted nothing to do with this man who were more powerful than a legion of demons. They feared Jesus because of His power and want nothing to do with Him. On the other hand, the freed man embraced Jesus and wanted to go with His Saviour.
Whenever we encounter the power of Jesus, we can respond in 2 ways: Embrace it or fear it. The town’s people chose to fear it because they didn’t want anything to do with someone who is more powerful than those demons. They chose to reject Jesus and in turn missed out on knowing the Saviour. It’s truly sad to see how they wanted nothing to do with Jesus, their only source of salvation. When we encounter Jesus powerfully, we too will have to make a choice. Will we embrace the power and the love of God, or will we fear it and reject it? Let us choose the former so that we will never push Jesus away. Only then will we truly have life in Him.
