Sharing a short devotional with you from Proverbs 26:11 – Growing into Maturity

Verse 11 says, “11 As a dog returns to its vomit,
    so fools repeat their folly.”

Nobody pukes and eats their own puke. That is just straight out nasty. Nobody in their right mind would ever do that. However, the proverb here is using this analogy to describe the folly of one who keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again. When we know we made a mistake or know that something is wrong, the wise thing to do is to right the wrong. That’s the only way we can grow and mature. A person who repeats their wrongs over and over again is the one who keeps stumbling and failing without learning to grow from the mistakes. If it’s sin, it is the lack of repentance.

Everyone will say that they will never return to their own vomit, but aren’t we doing exactly that when we don’t repent? Isn’t that what it is when we keep repeating our mistakes over and over again without the heart and the motivation to put our mistakes behind us? When we keep sinning without repentance, it’s folly. We keep causing harm to ourselves without knowing how much it’s hurting us. God’s word is wise and good for us. May we learn from our mistakes. May we repent from our sins so that we can grow into maturity. Making mistakes is part of life. We all make mistakes. However, what do we choose to do after making mistakes? Do we get stuck in our mistakes and repeat them over and over again like a dog returning to its own vomit? Or do we learn and grow from it so that we can mature and live a better life?

May God give us the wisdom and strength to say no to our mistakes and make real changes for the betterment of ourselves. May we turn from sin and return to the Lord who loves us. When we approach God in repentance, He will always forgive us. May that truth give us the confidence to do what is pleasing in the eyes of the Lord.

Blessings,

Kelsey
